Environmental Post Impact Assessment of Crude Oil Spill From NNPC Pipeline at Km.198 Izon, Niger State
PROJECT SUMMARY
The
pipeline carrying crude oil from Escravos to Kaduna
Refining and Petrochemical Company got ruptured at
km. 198 Izom – Sarkin Pawa, Kafin Koro Local
Government Area, Niger State. This resulted in the
spillage of unknown quantity of crude oil and
subsequent pollution of the environment. The spill
was arrested immediately and the ruptured pipe
replaced. The spilled oil was partly contained by
channelling same into three large pits dug at the
site for this purpose, where it was burnt. The
spilled oil, which flowed along the Nako stream,
before the arrival of the officials polluted entire
stream, soils, farmlands, vegetation, aquatic life,
soil micro organisms, etc along the course of the
Stream.
After the damaged pipe was replaced, which
foreclosed any possibility of oil leakage, it was
discovered that the surface at the point of leakage
appears oily particularly at the beginning and
during the wet season. This problem was observed to
be less severe during the dry season.
The project elements are:-
Determining the extent of pollution.
Quantification and evaluation of impacts on the
environment, including impacts on soil and
sediments, ground and surface water bodies,
general ecology, air and socio-economics of the
immediate communities.
Establish the source of oil, which appears on
the surface even after the pipeline, was
repaired and doubly checked.
Suggest measures to forestall future occurrences
